Polar Bear Country

Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, far north of the mainland and well on the way to the North Pole. Most of it is wilderness of glaciers, tundra and sea ice, protected as national parks and nature reserves. For many travelers it is the first choice for looking for polar bears from a ship.

The main settlement, Longyearbyen, is where most expedition cruises begin and end. From there, small ships sail along the west coast of Spitsbergen, the largest island, into the fjords of the north and, when the ice allows, around the archipelago or toward the edge of the pack ice.

What You See

Polar bears

Seen on the sea ice and along coasts, often from the ship or from inflatable boats at a safe distance.

Walrus

Hauled out on beaches in groups. Since 2025, boats must keep at least 150 meters from haul-out sites at slow speed.

Seabird cliffs

Huge summer colonies of guillemots, kittiwakes and little auks on sheer cliffs above the sea.

Glaciers and ice

Calving glacier fronts, drifting floes and, farther north, the pack ice itself.

Arctic reindeer and foxes

Svalbard’s own small reindeer graze the tundra, and Arctic foxes patrol below the bird cliffs.

History

Remains of whaling stations, trappers’ huts and polar expeditions, all protected as cultural heritage.

Svalbard’s 2025 Rules

Since 2025, only ships with 200 or fewer passengers may enter the protected areas.

New environmental regulations for Svalbard took effect in January 2025. According to the rules as summarized by AECO member operators:

  • Ships carrying more than 200 passengers may not enter the protected areas.
  • Landings in protected areas are allowed only at 43 designated sites.
  • Vessels and boats must stay at least 500 meters from polar bears from 1 March to 30 June; AECO members keep at least 300 meters at all times.
  • It is forbidden to disturb, lure or pursue polar bears.
  • Boats keep slow speeds near bird cliffs in the nesting season and near walrus haul-outs, and may not break fast ice except on set shipping routes.

The Governor of Svalbard administers the rules; your expedition leader will brief you on them before the first landing.

Choosing a Svalbard Voyage

Voyages run from about a week to around two weeks. Shorter trips focus on the west and north coasts of Spitsbergen; longer ones attempt a full circumnavigation, which depends on ice. A ship small enough for the protected areas is now essential if you want landings and wildlife-rich fjords. Our sister site A Voyage Travel compares expedition voyages with other cruise styles, and the Cruising Antarctica guide to expedition ships and landings explains why small ships land more often.

Svalbard Questions

Will I definitely see a polar bear in Svalbard?

No one can promise it. Expedition teams spend long hours scanning the ice and coastline, and many voyages see bears, but sightings depend on ice, weather and luck. Since 2025, ships must also keep greater distances from bears.

Can large cruise ships visit Svalbard?

Large ships can call at Longyearbyen and some other places, but since 2025 vessels carrying more than 200 passengers may not enter Svalbard’s protected areas, which cover much of the archipelago.

How do I get to the ship?

Most Svalbard expedition cruises start and end in Longyearbyen, reached by flights from mainland Norway, usually via Oslo or Tromso. Lines often arrange charter flights or hotel nights as part of the package.
