Arctic cruising divides into two broad styles. Expedition cruises use small, ice-strengthened ships with an expedition team, inflatable boats and few fixed ports. The daily plan follows the ice, the weather and the wildlife, and landings are made on wild shores. Svalbard, East Greenland and the Northwest Passage are classic expedition territory.
Port-based voyages follow a set schedule between towns. The Norwegian coastal route, Iceland circumnavigations and many Greenland and North Cape itineraries on mainstream and premium lines fit here. You get Arctic scenery and culture with more comfort and predictability, but fewer wild landings.

Rules That Protect the Arctic
Arctic tourism is regulated by the countries that govern each region and guided by AECO, the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators, whose members follow shared guidelines on wildlife, cultural remains, local communities and biosecurity. Svalbard tightened its rules in 2025, limiting ship size in protected areas and setting new distances from polar bears.
